Unveiling the Littlebrook Hoard: A Coin Collection's Journey to £30,000 at Auction
Imagine discovering a treasure trove of coins, hidden for centuries, right under your feet. That's exactly what happened when builders embarked on a house extension near Blandford Forum in Dorset, uncovering a collection that's now set to fetch an astonishing £30,000 at auction. But this isn't just any ordinary coin find; it's a fascinating tale of history, mystery, and the unexpected.
The Littlebrook Hoard, as it's come to be known, consists of over 200 coins, with a significant portion dating back to the reign of Henry VII (1485-1509). This collection was found 22 years ago, a serendipitous discovery by builders who were transforming the landscape of a parking area. Peter Gray, a retired international bank inspector, and his wife Jackie, are now preparing to part with their extraordinary find due to a move.
"It was a thrilling surprise to learn about the hoard," Gray shared. "You never anticipate uncovering a trove of coins like this. As for their owner, we remain in the dark, but the area's historical significance hints at a possible smuggler's hand. The Dorset Gap, not far from the cottage, was a vital route connecting the South Coast to Dorchester and Salisbury."
The coins, dating from the early 16th century, offer a glimpse into a bygone era. They represent a carefully curated selection of higher-value silver coins, predating the introduction of the new weight standard in 1526. This discovery is a testament to the rich history of the region and the potential for hidden treasures that lie beneath our feet.
The Littlebrook Hoard will be auctioned individually at Noonans Mayfair on February 10th. Coin specialist Jim Brown at Noonans provides insight into the hoard's origins: "The Littlebrook Hoard was initially named the Okeford Fitzpaine Hoard when discovered in May 2004. It comprises 213 silver coins, including 176 groats and 37 half groats, in various conditions, with the majority dating from Henry VII's reign."
This extraordinary collection invites us to ponder the stories and secrets it holds, leaving us curious about the lives of those who once owned these coins and the circumstances of their hidden legacy. Will you be among those who witness the auction and perhaps even own a piece of history?
