Tropical plants are experiencing significant changes in their flowering patterns due to the climate crisis, with some blooming months earlier or later than before. A recent study analyzing 8,000 plants over the last 200 years reveals these shifts, posing potential risks to biodiversity. Researchers from various countries, including Brazil, Ecuador, Ghana, and Thailand, have discovered that tropical flowers are responding to climate breakdown in ways that were previously thought unlikely. The Brazilian amaranth tree flowers 80 days later than in the 1950s, while the Ghanaian rattlepod shrub's flowering period shifted 17 days earlier between the 50s and 90s. These findings challenge the notion that tropical regions, known for their stable temperatures, would be less affected by climate change. Skylar Graves, the lead researcher, emphasizes that no part of the Earth is immune to climate change's impacts. The tropics, covering a third of the globe, are home to the most biodiverse ecosystems, with nearly 180 new plant species discovered annually. The study, which compiled museum data from 1794 to 2024, found that flowering timings have shifted by an average of two days per decade. This has led to concerns about the entire tropical ecosystem's health, as these changes can disrupt food chains and communities. The researchers warn that these shifts may cause 'cascading impacts across entire ecosystems,' emphasizing the need for further understanding and conservation efforts in tropical regions. Dr. Emma Bush from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh supports this, highlighting the long-standing lack of study and understanding of tropical ecosystems and their climate change impacts.
