Cruise Ship Scandal: What You Need to Know About Carnival's Worker Exploitation Claims (2026)

Carnival Cruise Ship Under Scrutiny for Worker Exploitation Allegations

A luxury cruise ship, the Carnival Encounter, docked in Darwin, Australia, faced scrutiny from investigators of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) on Monday. The investigation stems from claims of worker exploitation, with the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) receiving hundreds of complaints about the international cruise line over the past six months.

The MUA's Sydney branch organizer, Shane Reside, revealed that a whistleblower contacted the union late last week with further 'horrifying' reports about living conditions on the ship. These reports detailed extreme poor living and working conditions, including overcrowded accommodations and a lack of safe, free drinking water, while crew members earned as little as $2.50 per hour.

The union's concerns are significant, with allegations of skin infections due to cramped living conditions and crew members being forced to work while suffering from serious illnesses, including gastro. Mr. Reside also mentioned that whistleblowers claimed crew members worked over 10 hours a day for more than 30 days consecutively, with some being pressured by company doctors to return to work while still sick.

Carnival Cruise Line, however, maintains its innocence, stating that it has 'nothing to hide' and that no deficiencies were found during the AMSA inspection. The company welcomes the oversight as an assurance mechanism for its crew and operations.

AMSA's inspection concluded without any reported deficiencies or follow-up actions. The details of any recommendations made by investigators remain unclear.

Carnival Corporation, the international cruise line operator, operates over 90 ships. The Carnival Encounter, the ship under investigation, had approximately 1,100 crew members on board and can accommodate up to 2,600 guests. It operates year-round from Brisbane, Australia.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Carnival Cruise Line reported a net income of $2.8 billion in 2025, highlighting the complex nature of the situation and the need for thorough scrutiny.
