In a significant legal move, Fulton County has initiated a request in federal court aimed at reclaiming documents related to the 2020 election, which were recently taken by the FBI during a search operation conducted last week. This information was confirmed by officials from the county on Wednesday.
The motion not only seeks the return of these important documents but also calls for the unsealing of a sworn affidavit from a law enforcement officer that was presented to the judge who authorized the search warrant. Robb Pitts, the chairman of the county, mentioned that they are unable to disclose the specifics of the motion due to the ongoing confidentiality of the case.
On January 28, the FBI carried out a search at the main election office of Fulton County located in Union City, focusing on obtaining records connected to the controversial 2020 election. This particular county, known for its predominantly Democratic population, has become a focal point for former President Donald Trump and his supporters since he narrowly lost Georgia to Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. Trump has persistently claimed, without credible evidence, that widespread voter fraud in this county was the reason behind his defeat in the state.
Defending the integrity of the election processes within the county, Pitts pointed out that Fulton County has successfully conducted 17 elections since 2020 without any major issues. He remarked, "The president himself and his allies refuse to accept the reality of their loss. Even if he had secured Georgia, it would not have changed the outcome of the presidency."
Pitts also referenced recent comments made by Trump on a podcast, where he suggested that Republicans should strive to 'take over' elections and 'nationalize' the electoral process.
He emphasized, "This situation goes beyond just Fulton County. It speaks to the larger framework of elections across Georgia and indeed the entire nation." A cover sheet of the warrant shared with the county details a comprehensive list of items sought by the agents, including all ballots, tabulator tapes from vote-counting machines, electronic images of the ballots created during counting and recounting processes, as well as complete voter registration lists.
