Sam Raimi Debunks Spider-Man 4 Black Cat Rumors: The Truth About Rachel McAdams (2026)

Seventeen years after the initial speculation began, Sam Raimi is finally setting the record straight regarding the casting of villains for Spider-Man 4. This long-awaited clarification comes at a time when fans are eager to know the truth behind what could have been in the Spider-Man universe.

Raimi, who directed a trilogy featuring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, had plans for a fourth installment. However, due to creative disagreements and various delays, he ultimately stepped away from the project. Before Sony announced they would reboot the franchise with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man, rumors circulated that actress Rachel McAdams was in negotiations to portray Black Cat, a formidable villain in the Spider-Man lore. Shortly after these rumors emerged, McAdams herself denied any such discussions.

In a recent interview with CinemaBlend while promoting his latest film, Send Help, which features McAdams, Raimi was asked if he had ever considered her for a role in Spider-Man 4. He firmly stated that there were no talks or auditions for a female antagonist during the film's development. Instead, he confirmed that his primary focus was on discussions with John Malkovich about taking on the role of Vulture, a detail that had already been made public. Raimi’s response was clear and straightforward: "No. Yeah, we never had auditions for a female villain that I'm aware of. Look, I talked to John Malkovich about playing the Vulture, and he was wonderful, and we got along great. But the movie never went."

This announcement follows closely on the heels of another update from Raimi regarding Spider-Man 4, where he expressed that revisiting his version of the story wouldn’t feel appropriate. He mentioned, "I handed the torch off to someone else. And I think they’ve got to keep running with the storyline and the audience that is now following the torchbearer."

While it seems that Raimi has bid farewell to his Spider-Man saga, he did return to the Marvel universe by directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022 after Scott Derrickson departed the project. Interestingly, Rachel McAdams also featured in this sequel, reprising her role as Dr. Christine Palmer, a character she portrayed in the previous Doctor Strange film and even lent her voice to in an episode of the animated series What If...?

Despite Raimi's departure, many fans remain optimistic about seeing Tobey Maguire don the Spider-Man suit again. Both he and Andrew Garfield made notable returns in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home, leading to speculations about their potential involvement in upcoming Avengers films, particularly Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which are expected to explore the multiverse and reintroduce characters from earlier X-Men films.

Although Spider-Man 4 never materialized, excitement continues to build around Tom Holland’s version of the character, with a new film titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day scheduled for release on July 31, 2026. This anticipated installment will feature a cast that includes Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, and Sadie Sink in a yet-to-be-revealed role. The film is set to be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
