Tesla's India Venture: A Tale of Missed Opportunities and Discounts
A Disappointing Start for Tesla in India
Tesla's journey into the Indian automotive market has been a rollercoaster, and it seems the company is now facing a significant letdown. Despite years of efforts, including lobbying for reduced import duties and rumors of local manufacturing, Tesla's official launch in India last year was met with a less-than-enthusiastic response.
The High-Priced Model Y Dilemma
Instead of embracing a government scheme that would have lowered import tariffs in exchange for a commitment to local production, Tesla chose to go it alone, importing all its vehicles. This decision resulted in an astronomical price tag for the Model Y, starting at nearly $70,000 in India due to import duties as high as 110%.
Discounts and Unsold Inventory
A recent report from Bloomberg reveals that Tesla is now offering discounts on unsold Model Y SUVs to clear inventory. The discounts, amounting to up to ₹200,000 (~$2,200 USD), are a clear indication that Tesla's initial batch of imports hasn't been well-received.
According to the report, Tesla imported approximately 300 vehicles, but around 100 remain unsold, with early reservation holders canceling their orders. This aligns with previous reports of a mere 600 orders for the Model Y in the vast Indian market, falling far short of expectations.
Slow Sales and a Pricey Misstep
Sales have been painfully slow, with Tesla managing to sell only about 100 cars in the months following its launch. The discounts are being offered on this initial batch of unsold inventory, a clear sign that Tesla's pricing strategy in India was flawed.
Electrek's Perspective
As Electrek's writer put it, "I told you so" seems like an understatement. The article titled "Tesla finally launches in India, but at a price that doesn't make sense" was a prescient warning. It was evident that selling a $40,000 car in the US for $70,000 in India would not result in high sales volumes. The addressable market at that price point in India is minuscule.
A Missed Opportunity with the Indian Government
What's even more frustrating is that Tesla had a clear path to success in India. The government offered a compromise: commit to building a factory, and we'll reduce import duties on your imported cars while you establish local manufacturing. However, Tesla decided against this deal, likely due to its current overcapacity in production relative to demand.
The Uncertain Future
It remains unclear what Tesla's next steps will be. While the company has invested in infrastructure, including service centers and Superchargers, it's not sustainable at the current rate. Tesla may continue operating at this scale while lobbying the government for rule changes, but without local manufacturing, which it seems reluctant to pursue, scaling its operations in India will be a challenge.
